Erin Cox was suspended for five games for driving her drunk friend home from a party.
When Erin arrived at the party for pick up her drunk friend, the cops had already shown up, arrested several people, and told several others they would be summoned to court. When her school got notice of this, they benched her for five games and stripped her of her captaincy. Eleanor Cox, Erin's mother, did and interview on "Good Morning America" to talk about the recent events dealing with her daughter. "She did what she thought was right and I'm very proud of her," she stated to the interviewer. Her mother seemed very worried about her daughter stating she was “fragile”. Trust us, we get that teen drinking is a serious problem, but do we have to show our stance by punishing an innocent party for trying to help out a friend?
Personally, I think that she did the right thing and she helped her friend. If she would have attemped to drive home drunk, it would not have turned out too well.
Wendy Murphy, their family attorney, released a statement to “Good Morning America” that later tuesday and said “By punishing Erin Cox, the North Andover School District sends a contrary and very dangerous message -- that young people are better off letting their friends drive drunk.” With this said, did the school expect Erin to stay home and let her friend drive home drunk?

I think this story is very interesting, but unfair. She was trying to help her friend. If she would have let her friend drive home drunk, there would have been more problems. When you drive drunk, you are unaware of your surroundings. Intoxication makes you do things you wouldn't do, say things you wouldn't say. That is why those who drink and drive get into collisions, because they are unaware of their surroundings, and can't think logically. The red light may look green to them, or maybe they drank so much they are on the verge of passing out. Behind the wheel, you have to be responsible, and think of how much damage you could do while unaware. You could have been involved in a hit and run, but wouldn't remember it. So instead of letting her friend suffer those consequences of jail for a DUI, Erin did the right thing and drove her drunk friend home.
ReplyDeleteI love this story because it has a message that alot of parents should talk about to thier teens. I agree that this was unfair. It's like the school is sending out a message saying, "Don't help out your friend, or you will get deprived of your favorite sport." It's sad. I think that when you put up your opinion, maybe you could have put how you would feel in that situation. You picked a great story by the way.
